Nestled
against the scenic Mogollon Rim in
the Upper Sonoran Desert country,
Sedona and the Verde Valley is a
perfect haven and hot-spot for
year-round and migratory species.
Due to its ideal climate,
typography, latitude, river and
desert combinations, the Verde
Valley creates a diversity of
habitats which offers tremendous
birding opportunities in an
extremely compact area.
The Verde Valley encompasses
Arizona's most beautiful and
historical places to visit such as
Sedona, Jerome, Page Springs,
Cottonwood and Camp Verde.
Meandering between and through these
landmarks are many miles of wild and
scenic riparian habitats along the
Verde River, Oak Creek and Wet
Beaver Creek.
On our tour we will take you to Page
Springs, nationally known for its
vineyards, which is also recognized
by the Northern Arizona Audobon
Society (NAAS), as one of the more
"important birding areas" for the
state of Arizona. The 76 acres of
prime wildlife habitat running along
lower Oak Creek is host to over 340
recorded species of birds.
The springtime offers peak
migrations between mid April and
early May as tens of thousands of
colorful songbirds make their way
north which lasts through the month
of September. This is the best time
to see neo-tropical species such as
hummingbirds, warblers and
flycatchers especially in the month
of May. According to the NAAS, "over
a hundred and thirty species of
birds are typically seen on one day
excursions in May".
In late summer after the Monsoon
season, the Verde Valley will
experience a second spring, so to
speak, which brings new wildflowers
that attract birds and butterflies.
In the fall bird watchers visit the
Verde Valley for many reasons. The
painter's-pallet of gold, yellows
and red autumn leaves along gorgeous
Oak Creek is a perfect haven for a
new wave of migratory species and a
long list of accidental vagrants;
offering rare photo-ops all while
escaping the summer heat. Some
species of birds you may see in
autumn are the Pygmy Nuthatch, Red
Crossbill and Orioles.
The winter provides great vistas of
huge flocks of birds migrating to
Mexico and South America as well as
northern bird species that migrate
to Arizona for the winter. Winter is
the peak season to see Golden Eagles
together with Bald Eagles as October
thru March is their mating and
nesting season in the Verde Valley.
